Jill Stein Ups Fundraising Goal For Recounts To $7 Million

While the rest of us were busy devouring turkey, Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein was busy seizing on calls for an election audit by raising money for full recounts in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
The Stein campaign launched a fundraising blitz on Wednesday to collect $2.5 million for recounts in the three contested states, all of which were won by Donald Trump on November 8. But after hitting her original goal in about a day, Stein increased the goal to $7 million, as the initial amount only covered filing fees and not attorney fees (estimated to cost in the neighborhood of $2-3 million).
“Election integrity experts have independently identified Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin as states where ‘statistical anomalies’ raised concerns. Our effort to recount votes in those states is not intended to help Hillary Clinton,” Stein’s campaign website says. “These recounts are part of an election integrity movement to attempt to shine a light on just how untrustworthy the U.S. election system is.”

Stein has raised nearly $5 million as of Friday morning. According to her website, the campaign is trying to collect enough money by the deadlines for each state. For Wisconsin, they will need is $1.1 million by Friday. In Pennsylvania and Michigan, they will need $500,000 by Monday and $600,000 by Wednesday respectively.

“If we only raise sufficient money for two, we will demand recounts in two states. If we only raise enough money for one, we will demand a recount in one state,” Stein’s website states. “We cannot guarantee a recount will happen in any of these states we are targeting. We can only pledge we will demand recounts in those states.”
